How customers pay invoices

Your customers pay an invoice from a secure invoice page, using the payment methods you attach to that invoice. This article explains which methods are available, what your customer sees, and how each payment shows up in ATB Invoicing.

The payment methods you can offer

ATB Invoicing supports four payment methods. Each one must be turned on for your organization before you can attach it to an invoice.

  • Interac e-Transfer Request — Your customer accepts an Interac money request from their own bank. Funds arrive in minutes once accepted, and there is no cost to the customer.
  • EFT (Direct Deposit) — The invoice shows your bank deposit details so the customer can send an EFT. Funds typically arrive in 3–5 business days.
  • Cheque — The invoice shows your cheque instructions, such as who to pay and where to send it.
  • Cash — The invoice shows your cash payment instructions.

To turn methods on, open your profile menu and select Manage Organization, then go to Payment Options. Interac e-Transfer and EFT both need a deposit account selected. For cheque and cash, you can add instructions that appear on the invoice.

Note. Payment Options lists the cost to your business for each method. For example, Interac e-Transfer costs your business up to $1.50 per request. Check your specific account terms.

Choosing methods for each invoice

On each invoice, the Payment options section shows the methods that are included. Select Edit payment options to change them. If the customer has Payment Preferences saved on their customer record, those methods are selected for you when you pick that customer.

You must attach at least one payment method before you can send an invoice. After you send, the payment methods are locked.

What your customer sees

  1. Your customer receives the invoice by email, text message, or both. The message contains a secure link to the invoice.
  2. The link opens the invoice page. For security, each link works once. If it has already been used or has expired, the page offers Email me a secure link (or Text me a secure link), which sends a new link to the contact details on file.
  3. The invoice page shows the line items, totals, and a How to pay section with the amount due.
  4. The customer chooses a payment method to see its details.

How each method works for the customer

Interac e-Transfer

When you send the invoice, ATB Invoicing creates the Interac money request for the amount due, in Canadian dollars. Interac does not send its own email to your customer. Instead, the customer selects Pay by Interac e-Transfer on the invoice page, which takes them to Interac to complete the transfer from their online banking.

Interac e-Transfer requires the customer to have an email address or a Canadian mobile number on their customer record.

EFT (Direct Deposit)

The customer sees your account holder name, institution number, transit number, and account number. Each value has a Copy button so the customer can paste it into their online banking.

Cheque and Cash

The customer sees the instructions you set up. If you did not add instructions, the page shows "Pay by cheque." or "Pay in cash."

How payments show up in ATB Invoicing

  • Interac e-Transfer — Open the invoice and select Refresh in the Interac e-Transfer panel. When Interac reports the deposit as complete, the invoice is marked Paid.
  • EFT, cheque, and cash — These payments do not update the invoice automatically. Once you confirm the funds in your bank account, open the invoice menu and select Mark as paid.
Tip. Each invoice that includes EFT, cheque, or cash shows a Tracking Your Payment notice until you mark it as paid.
