Tags are short labels, such as "Wholesale", "Contractor" or "VIP", that you attach to customers so you can find groups of them quickly. This article explains how tags work, who can create them, and how to use them to filter your customer list.
How tags work
Your organization has one shared list of tags. Everyone in your organization picks from the same list, which keeps spelling consistent.
- A customer can have as many tags as you need.
- Tags are not case-sensitive. "VIP" and "vip" are treated as the same tag.
- A tag name can be up to 64 characters and cannot contain commas.
- Customers never see your tags.
Who can create and delete tags
Anyone with the Create and manage clients permission can add existing tags to a customer or remove them.
Creating a new tag or deleting one from your organization's list requires the Manage business profile permission. Admins have this permission by default. See Managing administrators and sub-users.
Add tags to a customer
- Click Customers in the top navigation, then click the customer's name.
- In the Customer Details panel, click the Tags card, or click Add Tags if the customer has none.
- Click the Search or add tags field. Your organization's tags appear in a list.
- Click a tag to add it, or type to narrow the list.
- To create a new tag, type its name and choose the option marked Add new tag.
- Click Save.
To remove a tag from the customer, click the × beside it, then click Save. This removes the tag from that customer only.
Note. If you do not have the Manage business profile permission, choose from existing tags only. New tag names you type are not saved.
Manage your organization's tag list
- Click Customers in the top navigation.
- Click Manage tags.
- To add a tag, type a name in the New tag name field and click Add tag.
- To delete a tag, click the delete icon beside it, then click Delete tag to confirm.
Warning. Deleting a tag removes it from every customer that has it. This cannot be undone.
Filter your customer list by tag
- On the Customers page, click the filter icon beside the search box.
- Under Tags, select one or more tags.
- Click Apply Filters.
The list shows customers that have any of the selected tags. To clear the filter, click the × on the filter chip above the list, or click Clear filters.
You can also type a tag name in the search box. Search matches tags as well as names and contact details.
Tip. Agree on a short set of tags with your team before you start, and create them in Manage tags so everyone uses the same names.
